St Cadocs Flying Start

Building belonging through inclusion

Child making Easter crafts

Background

At St Cadocs flying start day care, diversity isn’t just recognised, it’s celebrated. Children and families come from a multitude of backgrounds including Persian, Arabic, Black African, Italian, Portuguese, Irish, Polish and more. Their team is committed to creating a space where every child feels seen, valued, and connected.

What are they doing differently?

St Cadocs flying start actively engages children's parents in their planning by asking how families celebrate their festivals and celebrations. This helps them to:

  • embed multicultural festivals into the curriculum, from Eid and St Patrick’s Day to Persian New Year and St David’s Day
  • adapt activities so all children can participate, like creating fire artwork for the Persian New Year
  • use crafts, dress-up, music and food to bring celebrations alive
  • mark special occasions like Mother's Day and Easter with themed crafts, cooking and sensory activities

This inclusivity was spurred by “Dyma Fi 2s” training which has given staff the confidence to have open conversations about culture with the children’s families and how best to incorporate this into their everyday planning.

Impact ...

  • The children gain a stronger sense of belonging and identity
  • The celebrations promote cultural awareness
  • Photographs and artwork displayed in the setting celebrates each child's contribution
  • The parents and families feel valued and included

Quote

"We have seen the children develop a sense of belonging and pride in their work, they love to show their parents what they have done"
