Lisa Matthews known as ‘Little Stepping Stones’
Supporting early bilingual learning

Background
Lisa Matthews is a childminder from Llanelli. She works independently and cares for up to 10 children , using a dedicated conservatory space for play and learning.
What are they doing differently?
Lisa wanted to strengthen children’s early bilingual skills and build confidence using simple Welsh. In response she’s introduced a weekly routine that links learning in her setting with learning at home.
- Each child takes home a book and one simple Welsh word to share with their family
- Parents read the book with their child and practise the word together in a natural, playful way
- Children revisit the words during the week and use them in songs, stories, and conversations
- Families repeat the Welsh words at home, strengthening the link between the setting and family life
Building a varied book collection took time and investment, but it now supports children of different ages and stages and keeps the weekly activity fresh and exciting.
Impact
- Children show more interest in books and stories.
- Early literacy skills have strengthened through regular reading at home and in the setting.
- Children show pride when choosing their weekly book and sharing it with their families.
- Families have developed positive routines around reading and language learning.
- Children show a growing awareness of Welsh culture and identity.
Quote
It's been wonderful to see children grow in confidence and excitement as they share Welsh words and stories with their families at home.
