We will start registering special school residential services from 2024
This is due to new regulations under the Regulation and Inspection of Social Care (Wales) Act 2016.
Earlier this year, Welsh Government consulted on draft regulations to define and regulate special school residential services, formerly known as residential special schools.
The Regulated Services (Special School Residential Services) (Wales) Regulations 2023 and the Regulated Services (Registration) (Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2023 will come into force on 31 December 2023.
The new regulations will define "special school residential service" as a new regulated service under section 2 of the 2016 Act, and require them to register with us.
Historically we have only inspected this type of service, rather than register them as well.
Registering with us
These services will not be required to register with us immediately. Registration guidance will be available on our website from 1 February 2024, as well as further guidance about writing a statement of purpose.
The online portal will go live in April 2024 and will close on 30 June 2024.
