CIW review of dementia care

Our thematic review of dementia care in care homes across Wales is underway.

This year, we will evaluate how well care homes promote well-being and achieve good outcomes for people living with dementia. Our final report will describe the quality of care received by people living with dementia in care homes across Wales.

First stages

  • We consulted with a stakeholder group in May 2019.
  • We spoke to people living with dementia, their families and carers, providers and relevant organisations. From this, we developed inspection tools to help us undertake this review.
  • Our dementia trainers – inspectors who have been assisted by Bangor University - Ageing & Dementia Research Centre have trained other inspectors regarding current dementia knowledge and care practice.
  • We have received more than 300 survey responses so far, and we will use that information to inform our review.

Next steps

From now to January 2020 we will be inspecting 228 care homes and will be looking at the experiences of people living with dementia and their carers (families). We will also consult with commissioners.

We will publish the final report in May 2020.
