CIW review of dementia care
Our thematic review of dementia care in care homes across Wales.
This year, we will evaluate how well care homes promote well-being and achieve good outcomes for people living with dementia. Our final report will describe the quality of care received by people living with dementia in care homes across Wales.
Our review process
During a series of inspections, we will listen to people living with dementia in care homes, and also to the experiences of their carers. We will observe how the care and support provided promotes and safeguards human rights.
We will give particular attention to the application of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, the use of antipsychotic medication and the care and support provided through the Welsh language.
Next steps
We are asking providers of care home services to compete our digital survey.
From September 2019 to January 2020 we will be inspecting care homes as part of the review. In the autumn we will consult with commissioners, and publish the final report in May 2020.
